History
Delta Air Lines’ history begins with Huff Daland Dusters, Inc., the world’s first aerial crop dusting service. The corporation was started in Macon, Georgia, on March 2, 1925, before relocating to Monroe, Louisiana, in the summer of 1925. It was equipped with a Huff-Daland Duster, the first genuine crop duster, which was developed to treat cotton boll weevil infestations. General manager C.E. Woolman, who eventually became Delta’s first CEO, gathered a group of local businessmen to purchase the company’s assets. On December 3, 1928, Delta Air Service was founded and named after the Mississippi Delta region.
On June 17, 1929, passenger service commenced between Dallas, Texas, and Jackson, Mississippi, with stops in Shreveport and Monroe, Louisiana. Service had been expanded east to Atlanta and west to Fort Worth, Texas by June 1930. The airmail contract for the route Delta had pioneered was awarded to another airline, which purchased the assets of Delta Air Service, and passenger service terminated in October 1930. On December 31, 1930, local banker Travis Oliver, acting as a trustee, C.E. Woolman, and other local investors bought back Delta Air Service’s crop-dusting assets and founded Delta Air Corporation.
In 1934, Delta Air Corporation was awarded an airmail contract and began operating as Delta Air Lines on Mail Route 24, which runs from Fort Worth, Texas, to Charleston, South Carolina. In 1941, Delta relocated its headquarters from Monroe, Louisiana, to Atlanta, Georgia. Delta Air Lines became the official name of the company in 1945. The firm began regularly scheduled freight transit in 1946. The firm introduced the first subsidized flights between Chicago and Miami in 1949. Following the acquisition of Chicago and Southern Air Lines in 1953, the firm established its first foreign operations. It was the first airline to use the Douglas DC-8 in 1959. It was the first airline to use Convair 880 planes in 1960. It introduced the Deltamatic reservation systems in 1964, which used IBM 7070 series computers.
